Convention Edition: Keep Ulster Moving; March!

“Conventional Wisdom” from a Local Government Expert and Architect of the Ulster County Charter/Office of County Comptroller, Gerald Benjamin

As the Ulster County Democratic Nominating Convention draws near for the deciding vote on Thursday, June 27 many committee members are hearing about the essential qualifications for this office. Gerald Benjamin, author and architect of our local government’s charter reforms weighed in with his own perspective:

“The County Comptroller’s job is to make sure that our money is spent in smart, efficient and effective ways… and not spent, even if budgeted, if spending it stops making sense. Accountants are trained to be sure that the books balance: important, but not most important. What’s needed above all is the brains and experience to know the right questions to ask, and the character to ask them, even when it is sure to get powerful people mad. It’s not about picking fights. It is about willingness to speak truth to power, for the public good.”
